About Oral Pathology Services
The College of Dentistry biopsy service began in 1980 and was provided by Drs. William H. Binnie, E James Cundiff, and John M Wright. The biopsy service today is one of the largest databases of oral pathology in the world and serves as a vital research resource for the faculty and provides opportunities to collaborate with colleagues worldwide to investigate various aspects of head and neck pathology. Additionally, it provides extensive experience in surgical pathology for the residents training in oral and maxillofacial pathology where it offers the department a competitive advantage in the recruitment of residents.

Biopsy Requisition FormAlso included with each biopsy kit
Each biopsy specimen must be accompanied by a completed Biopsy Requisition Form that includes patient demographics, relevant clinical history, a description of the lesion, and biopsy site information. Each complimentary biopsy kit contains specimen containers, shipping materials, a Biopsy Requisition Form, and an informational sheet outlining our fee schedule and specimen shipping instructions.
What Patients Need To Know
The fee for the biopsy you recently had has two parts: the doctor who performed your biopsy charges a fee for surgically removing or sampling your lesion, and there is a pathology fee for the microscopic interpretation of that specimen.
Oral Pathology Experertise
Oral Pathologists are the only dental/pathology specialists with specific training in oral pathology. Their specialty training allows them to provide the greatest expertise and experience when interpreting biopsies from the oral regions. While general pathologists can legally provide this service, they are not specifically trained to do so. Your doctor’s decision to have an oral pathologist interpret your biopsy demonstrates their understanding and commitment that you, his/her patient, receive the highest quality of care available.
Billing through your provider
Because of the federal "No Surprise Act", your doctor should have discussed with you the fee for your pathology interpretation. Depending on what was chosen, you may or may not receive a separate invoice for pathology services. We submit claims to all medical and dental insurance plans. However, except for Medicare, Medicaid, and UnitedHealthcare, we are not currently contracted with medical insurers and are generally considered out of network. Please provide complete, legible, and accurate billing information. Photocopies of both the front and back of the insurance card are preferred to ensure timely claims processing.
Billing Contact
If you have any questions about billing, please contact our third-party billing provider at (866) 592-6822 (Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM EST).
