a Legacy of Excellence and a Future of Innovation
Welcome to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. As we navigate a transformative era in healthcare, our department stands at the forefront of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery education, patient care, and clinical innovation. Our unique position bridges the academic rigor of Texas A&M University with the high-volume clinical excellence of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, which allows us to offer a training environment that is exceptional in the country.
Educational Leadership & A Tradition of Service
Our primary mission remains the cultivation of the next generation of surgical leaders. I am proud to report that our residency program maintains a near hundred percent first-time pass rate on the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) exams. For the integrated dual-degree pathway training, our residents obtain their medical degrees at the Texas A&M College of Medicine in Dallas. Our impact on the specialty is perhaps best reflected in the leaders we produce. We hold a unique and proud legacy of training US Navy Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, many of whom have gone on to assume faculty and administrative leadership roles at every major Naval training program. Beyond the military, our alumni are shaping the future of the profession as faculty members at academic departments across the nation. This track record confirms our status as a premier incubator for academic and clinical leadership. Our commitment to hands-on excellence extends equally to our pre-doctoral students. Our dental students receive significant surgical training that exceeds national averages by double or triple, providing a level of exposure that is rare in dental education. This robust foundation drives exceptional outcomes, with most of our dental students who apply to residency successfully matching into their chosen programs.
Unmatched Clinical Volume & Specialized Care
Our clinical footprint continues to expand rapidly to serve the Dallas-Fort Worth community. We have solidified our standing as one of the largest providers in the state for facial trauma reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, oral cancer, and head and neck reconstruction. To support this volume, we have expanded our care network beyond Dallas to include Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth. This strategic growth allows us to provide premier surgical care to a wider population while ensuring our residents and dental students gain hands-on experience across diverse hospital systems.
Drivers of Innovation: Research
We are not just reacting to the future of medicine; we are defining it. Our department is a primary driver of innovation, actively pursuing cutting-edge research that bridges clinical practice with advanced technology. We are currently spearheading major initiatives involving Artificial Intelligence to improve diagnostic accuracy and surgical planning. Furthermore, we are deepening our collaborative research with Biomedical Sciences and Engineering. By bringing together surgeons, engineers, and scientists in this dynamic environment, we are developing the next generation of surgical solutions. Thank you for your interest in our department. We are proud of our history and even more excited about our future.
